Botox is a well-known cosmetic therapy used extensively in wrinkles removal and facial contouring. This is achieved by injecting synthesized Botolinum Toxin Type A into the targeted muscles, thereby blocking nerve endings from effectively contracting, creating a relaxed muscular condition.
What can Botox do?
Botox is used primarily in eliminating wrinkles and fine lines from the forehead (Frontalis), brow area (Glabella), and crowfeet around the eye. It can also be used in facial contouring, calf-size reduction and the treatment of sweaty palms.
Onset and Duration of Botox
The drug takes effect in around 2 days, peaking at 10 days and generally lasts from 4 to 6 months. Patients are usually required to return in a week after the initial injection for a follow-up (touch-up) session.
Are the effects of Botox lasting?
The effect of Botox is not permanent, as Botox works by blocking muscle contractions and the effects are slowly reversed as muscle contraction ability is recovered. It has been shown, however, that patients who performed regular Botox therapy over several years consecutively displayed a slower rate of muscular contraction recovery.
Will wrinkles become more pronounced after Botox fades?
No. Wrinkles will slowly return to its pre-Botox stage when the effects start to fade, and perhaps even slightly improved.
Any precautions to note?
It is generally advisable for patients to refrain from anything physically strenuous for the next 1-2 days following treatment. Patients are likewise advised to avoid any kind of activity that might involve intense facial stimulation. This is to minimize the chances of the Botox serum dislodging and affecting unintended areas.
Will there be complications?
The procedure itself is safe, simple and straightforward and as long as general precautions are heeded, complications are rare. In the unlikely even of complications, such as ptosis (drooping eyes), it usually recovers fully in 3-4 weeks. Complications usually occur from patient¡¯ lack of care after treatment (such as doing facial massages or rubbing the injected area) so it is imperative that patients take good care of themselves during the time advised.
